MacCore-10-15-07- Show 47
Source/Links
V Introduction
* Hope you enjoyed last week's interview with 1Passwd, I wasn't planning to send it out as a whole separate podcast but got long and the content was so good I didn't want to edit it.
* Later this show we have an interview with Ben and Devin of Mozy, another one of my favorite Apps.
* New Microphone- it was about time. Samson Audio CO1U - same Mic Victor and Adam have used. Still tweaking settings, send me feedback on how the audio sounds.
* Format of the show without Corey- what do you guys want? I don't want to repeat what other Podcasters are doing, premiss behind the MacCore has always been the "conversation"
* Trying to plan a trip to MacWorld this year - my first. Need advice. Am I too late in planning? How long do I need to stay? Do I need to stay at a hotel within walking distance -what is public transportation like? Any tips you could offer would be appreciated.

V IPhone "Elite" team posts an "unbricking" procedure
* 19-step directions for rolling back from 1.1.1 to the original 1.0.2 firmware and an unlocked state. Not for the faint of heart (one step says "get the secpack 4.0... some people have it, I have no idea how they got it but it's needed") but some commenters there indicate that the process has worked for them. Note that unlike iPhoneSIMFree, this will probably not allow you to roll forward to the 1.1.1 firmware.

V Katie's Opinion
V Mixed- understand why Apple had to do this, but Bricking phones was extreme and if intentional was in very poor taste.
* Some members of iPhone Dev Team are saying that they now no longer think that the bricking was intentional.
* Hope that Apple will offer assistance to people with iBricks as a gesture of good faith and let this stand as a warning or scare tactic.
* Hope that Apple now sees that third party apps are desperately wanted on the iPhone and will offer an SDK or program for developers to get their Apps on the iPhone.
V Class Action Lawsuit Brought for Bricking
* A class-action lawsuit charges Apple and AT&T with intentionally breaking the iPhones of customers who unlocked or installed third-party applications on the handsets, and alleges that Apple and AT&T conspired to illegally monopolize portions of the mobile cell phone market. The 24-page formal complaint, filed Oct. 5 in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California,

V Signs Leopard Will Be Here Soon - What About Boot Camp?
* Apple recently posted a Support Document on Boot Camp reminding users that Boot Camp is time-limited beta software which expires when Leopard ships. "The license to use Boot Camp Beta expires when Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is available to the public. To continue using Boot Camp at that time, upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard."
It's not clear that the Boot Camp beta would necessarily stop working with Tiger once Leopard ships

* Adobe said that its creative suite applications have not been certified for use with Leopard. Adobe said it had not received a final copy for testing. V Is iTunes in Trouble?
V Amazon's MP3 Download Service
www.ipodobserver.com—33106
* Amazon MP3 is compatible with both Mac OS X and Windows, most portable media players including the iPod, and songs can be purchased and downloaded from a Web browser. Users wanting to purchase complete albums, however, will need to download the free Amazon MP3 Downloader application.
Unlike Apple's iTunes Store, Amazon's tracks are priced on a sliding scale. While some songs come in below Apple's US$0.99 a track at $0.89, many cost as much as tracks at the iTunes Store, and in some cases even more.
V My thoughts:
* limited selection
* DRM in iTunes hasn't really created a problem for me
* Poor interface - nothing is as easy as iTunes/iPod
V Universal looking to launch a new music service
www.macworld.com—index.php
* Universal Music Group is enlisting the support of other major record labels to launch a new music subscription service that will try to loosen Apple’s grip on the online music market, according MacWorld.
Universal has already enlisted Sony BMG Music as a potential partner and is in talks with Warner. The music industry is understood to be widely dissatisfied with the terms that Apple imposes for its iTunes store. Labels would like to charge different prices for new and older music.

V Listener Feedback:
V Ivin - iPod interface on iPhone - yank the headphones and credit refunding problems.
* 1.1.1 ads this as a "double tap"
* Gary - Apple TV in China
V Bill- Legalities of iPod listening in Car
* I have a serious question.  My daily podcast downloads are around twenty.  I listen mostly on a second generation Shuffle because I can clip it to my shirt collar.  I use one ear bud while driving in the car.  My commute in Atlanta is two hours a day one hour each way.
Is it legal to drive with one ear bud?  I often do the same sitting in my cube at work.  Some work that I perform is mindless and I can do this as do others here at the power company.  If I use one ear bud should I convert to mono somehow?
Are we entering the one ear bud generation?  I listen while I grocery shop now!
V Darren- Incrimental Backups
* Self professed Backup Queen. Just wanted to pick your brains about .mac backup as I know you use it.

I use .mac to backup keychains, contacts, etc. etc.

But I have started to notice that after the initial backup it adds an update backup file every time I run it.

Can I delete these old interim back-ups or are they all important???
